23 kms from Jabalpur, at Bhedaghat, the river Narmada has carved beautiful formation out of the marble rocks. People have managed to recognize familiar shapes out of these formations. Some of them being Shiv Parvati, Bull's head, Elephant's foot etc.
After cutting through the marvelous marble rocks, waters of the River Narmada take a sudden plunge from a height of 200ft causing a thunderous sound and a considerable amount of mist giving birth to the Great Waterfall so aptly named "Dhuandhar" or the smoke cascade.
Madan Mahal Fort was built around 11 A.D and was the pleasure palace for Madan Singh, the tenth Gond King and son of Rani Durgawati. During her reign, the fort was used as a watchtower.
Situated on a hill and approached stone by steps, the chaunsath yogini temple commands a singularly beautiful sight of the whole area around and also of the river flowing through the marble rocks. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this 10th century Kalchuri temple has exquisitely carved, sixty four sculptures of various goddess forms of Durga, besides a Shiva temple.
