Although I have very little knowledge about cycles or bikes, but for last few months I have been tracking activities around Bike Riding and seeing increasing interest among Indians.
I remember my childhood when old people used to ride cycles for their daily stuff and children used to enjoy the rides...But during those days, as we grew and reached college things changed a bit... We were more excited about scooter or motorbikes !
I think slowly things have changed over time and folks are exploring many new things in India as well. I feel great when I listen about various groups on Facebook, about all such activities. Few days back I met some drum enthusiasts who meet every weekend and enjoy music. Had you heard about such things, 10 years back?
Recently I have seen increased strength of cycle riders in my office and it feels good due to various factors. Actually it keeps oneself fit, less harm to the environment by avoiding motor-driven vehicles and no tension to park the vehicle :) ... And btw, my office encourage green means of doing things and there are energy saving in one of the objective unless it degrades the productivity drastically.
During last years, many of my friends have bought high end cycles and they love riding during early morning and on weekends. One of them always carry his cycle with him, whether he goes to his homeland in Himachal and on-site to germany.
4 years back when I had seen one of the cycle(bike) rider near Rohtang Pass, I was thinking if he is using this only for fun in Rohtang and someone told me that folks from Europe and other countries some to hills and always travel on paddling bikes !!! It was something very strange and new to me.
But when I see lot many folks doing this regularly around my office or town, it looks very exciting !!
Observing these passionate folks started with Mountain Terrain Biking 2010, when I joined this event last year and witnessed extremely passionate folks who completely 500 kilometers to toughest routes in Himalayas. This was done during 8 days and all of them were self-sufficient to maintain their bikes and repair them, when needed. It was wonderful to see people doing something so passionately. Luckily I also met some people who want to take riding as career and some of them had already participated in National or International Events !!!
Although I left cycle riding after my childhood after a very bad accident and now thinking of starting it again and join Mountain Terrain Biking during 2012, if not before !!! btw, I had joined the event under PHOTOQUEST 2010 and all photographs used here are shot during those wonderful 8 days in Himalayas !!! Get in touch with me at VJ@travellingcamera.com in case to know about my personal experience of this Mountain Terrain Biking !!!
