Shortest-Cut from Baba Balak Nath to Una in Himachal Pradesh || Motor-boats are used for transporting various bikes from one side(Lathiani) to other side(Mandla) of Govind Sagar Lake
Before March 2012, we had only heard of heavy use of Motorboats in some regions of India for transporting stuff from one place to another. This time we witnessed the similar thing at Govind Sagar Lake in Una region of Himachal Pradesh, India. Let's go through this PHOTO JOURNEY to know that how people traverse this lake to reach other part...
It was an unplanned visit to Govind Sagar lake when I was staying in Lathiani for Holi celebrations. During evening, some of us planned to visit one of the ghats of Govind Sagar Lake and nearest one was the one very well connected through road. It was near to Lathiani town only. On reaching near lake, we saw a huge motorboat with around 25 folks with their motorbikes in it and it was standing to wait for few more to join in. Although we had no bike, but we also thought of having a round of it.
Basically these Motorboats run between Lathiani and Mandla throughout the day. They start at 8:00 am in morning and run till late evening. These Motorboats are really popular and necessary to some of the folks who work on other side of the lake. If they don't opt for Motorboat, they have to spend extra 1.5 hrs on road for covering extra 40 kilometers.
Since many of them have to commute daily, they prefer to have motorbikes and these motorboats also take care of transportation of two wheelers of local employees. Business for Boatmen increases when folks from Punjab start coming to Baba Balak Nath ... Many of the families come via four wheelers and they miss the fun of boat ride in Govind Sagar lake.
Many young groups of Punjab come to Baba Balak Nath on motorbikes and this shortcut of Govind Sagar Lake is very popular among these travellers. A Boat-ride of 18 minutes save 1.5 Hrs and 40 kilometers. It costs only 20 Rs for a person with bike.
Apart from Time and Cost saving, it's an adventurous affair to have a boat ride in Govind Sagar Lake. Most of the times, people call it Boat-Ride in Bhakra Dam. Govind Sagar Lake is part of Bhakhra Project only.
Two bikes parked near the shoreline of Govind Sagar Lake. They are waiting for next boat to come and cross the lake. Boats are quite frequent. We noticed two boats, each of them covering one direction at a time and hence reducing waiting time.
Landscapes around Govind Sagar Lake are awesome ! Some of the Landscape photographs of Govind Sagar lake can be checked at - http://phototravelings.blogspot.com/2012/03/colorful-journey-to-govind-sagar-lake.html
Some islands come on the way during this ride from Lathiani To Madla @ Una, Himachal Pradesh, India. This whole boat-ride is very beautiful and we wish to go again with sufficient time in hand. This time, it was unplanned and very quick from Photography POV.
Here is a photograph of loaded Motorboat with all the Bikers from Baba Balak Nath and few bikers on top of the mountain who would be going in next boat. The place around shoreline of Govind Sagar Lake is awesome and people love to come here during evenings. Many folks come and enjoy their drinks here which is something local folks hate. But there is enough security around the place, but cleanness is one of the challenge for future.
A Photograph with closer look at bikers having fun on top a little mountain... This part is usually not visible during monsoons as lake starts covering more space during monsoon season and the place looks awesome during summers when some temples come out of the lake due to lower water-level. More temples can be seen near Bilaspur during summers ...
It's one of the best place try fishing at Govind Sagar Lake. There are around 100 private boats in this region which are only used for fishing. All above photographs of private boats are showing people who are actually dependent on fish-market. Various fish species from this lake are sold in Chandigarh or Delhi and they are proper regulators which take care of proper management of this business with local folks.
Few folks who were having some drinks around the lake. They asked us to click a photograph and assured that they will not litter around the place and will take all packets/bottles to home.
During winters, some of the land around lake can be used for agriculture. This is the portion of land which is not accessible to folks in Summers or Monsoons. These green fields around the lake, improves its beauty.
So if you are bike rider and traveling towards Hamirpur from Una, then you should not miss this fun. In fact many folks prefer this route while going to Kullu Manali from some parts of Punjab.
