Again the time has come for adventurous events in winters and Mountain Terrain Biking in Himalayas is going to happen in October. Today I got a call from one of the photographers who is going to cover MTB Himalayas 2012, Bhaven Jani. Since I get to explain some basic things/preparations repeatedly, I thought of putting it here for future reference.
Preparing equipments - When it comes to equipments, there are few basic things you need to consider -
- Dusty environment, so minimal efforts for changing lenses. Better to carry two bodies. Choice of lenses on two bodies will depend of kind of things to be shot and their basic nature.
- Extra Batteries are must as you never know that when you need to recharge and at times, it's difficult to find charging points at right time. Especially when camping in wild.
- Fast Lenses would be helpful for capturing action in better way... Especially in MTB (Mountain Terrain Biking) events, these are required.
- Camera shield to save it from showers, which can welcome you anywhere anytime.
- Keep a Tripod to try interesting things during night.. Star Trails, camp lights etc.

List can go on n on, but these are few very basic things.
Shooting Strategy - This can vary from on shooting style to another, but basic rule is to identify right place to shoot in advance. There is hardly any time when event is on, so you need to move ahead for right location & identify your frames etc. This is most important thing that adds lot of value to quality of shots you get. At the same time, it's also important to have flexibility to move around, means a dedicated vehicle is must thing.
Light varies from one place to another and time variation has also a big role to play. So you need to be very fast with settings for capturing right action with appropriate spirit.
Although light in hills during day would be harsh but some interesting things can be tried with it.
All the Best Bhaven and looking forward to some interesting shots !!!
