Recently we got a box of 'SmartEats' with
different types of healthy snacks. This brand is getting very popular in short
span of time and we also thought of trying the same. These snacks are
preservative free and made of whole grains, transfat free... and hence these
snacks cannot be compared to common bakery items... Here is what Monica says
about SmartEats...
Oatmeal Chewy Cookies (A delicious, healthy & crunchy cookie packed with nuts and raisins):
The mix of dry resins and nuts, add a good aroma to the final product. These cookies taste great, but production team needs to take care of the hardness. While the ingredients used in the cookies look interesting, they don’t do much when you take a bite of the cookie. It is too hard and therefore not something that people would enjoy with their cup of tea.
Parsley Pepper Crackers (An ideal tea time snack with a combination of herbs & cheese in whole wheat base):
Using pepper to season crackers seems to be very innovative idea. But the crackers could do with little more flavor of pepper. While the pepper is clearly visible on the cracker, the taste does not really justify the name. This could make for a very interesting snack, if accompanies with a salsa or garlic dip. But left on it’s own, it leaves a very dry and neutral taste in the mouth. The look of the cracker makes you much more than the taste provides you with.
Very Berry Strawberry (Specially dehydrated fruit with all the micronutrients intact. Great for having around the year):
Dried prunes have always been a favorite choice for healthy snacking. So this pack of dried strawberries comes as a refreshing change. They have a nice taste and texture & leave one feeling quite satisfied after a munch. This packet of strawberries is very tempting and you won't stop eating those until the packet get's empty. However, that satisfaction lasts only till to the time you don’t have a look at the price tag on the packet. The product is quite steeply priced for the quantity being offered and may not go down well with an average consumer.

Yummy Jaipuri Mixture (A roasted… not fried, mix of delicious and healthy lientils, seeds, grams & peanuts) :
A nice blend of nuts and lentils that provides a healthy snacking option for all weight watchers. This snack goes well with the cup of tea and drinks alike. Having said that, there are lots of similar options available in the market and this mix only adds to that range without providing anything additional or more exciting for a consumer.
A good preparation with the right blend of sugar and spice. The flavor of honey and tanginess of chilly have been well blended to make an interesting preparation out to regular nuts. Sprinkled sesame adds both to the visual appeal and taste of these nuts. But some of the nuts seem to have been over roasted which leave a slightly bitter after taste in the mouth. It must be remembered that any dish or snack is first eaten with the eyes before it reaches the mouth and hence it is important that the look is as good as the taste - otherwise it ends up being a wasted effort.
A low calorie mix of healthy lentil, this roasted snack is a weight watcher’s delight. It has the right amount of crunchiness with a balance use of spices. This snack should go down well with most healthy eaters who like to watch what they consume. This can also be served as an interesting snack with drinks, with a few add-ons like onion, green chilies & lemon juice.

Monica’s Innovation:
1. Soak ‘Oatmeal Chewy’ in half a bowl of cold milk and let them dissolve. Add a few freshly chopped walnuts and you have a healthy bowl of cereal for breakfast. Tip: A spoon of honey could be added to satisfy that craving for something sweet.
2. Cut the Pepper crackers into half, top them with thinly cut slices of cheese or low fat cottage-cheese and top up with a mix of finely chopped tomatoes & onion. Garnish it with a drop of tomato sauce and a coriander leaf. You have a ready to pop-in snack. For the very weight conscious, this cracker could be served with homemade salsa dip.
