Penguin organizes an annual lecture every year and invites a guest to share his or her thoughts. Last year, it was Dr A P J Abdul Kalam at India Habitat Center, New Delhi and this time it was none other than Mr Amitabh Bachhan, who addressed the audience at Thyagaraj Stadium in Delhi. This Photo Journey shares some Mobile clicks from the evening, along with some portions from Mr Amitabh Bachhan's lecture. We will also draw up some comparisons about how this year's lecture was different from the last year's, when Dr Abdul Kalam shared his vision about the country in 2020.
We reached the venue at 7:15pm and the lecture was supposed to start at 8:00pm. The most impressive part of the evening was timely execution. The event started sharp at 8pm and Mr Amitabh Bachchan ascended the stage. Audience of almost a thousand was eagerly waiting for him.
As soon as the 71 year old actor reached the Thyagaraj Stadium the sound of the audience`s applause took over the netball court at the
facility and Big B responded by flashing a smile
and folding his hands to gesture a ‘Namaste’. During the speech he touched upon his
memories of his father, the late legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan,
whose birth anniversary happened to be just two days ago on Nov 27. He also spoke about empowering the country`s women, Indian cinema, poetry, and more.
Past lectures were delivered by eminent personalities like writer-journalist Thomas Friedman, diplomat-writer Chris Patten, economist Amartya Sen, historian Ramachandra Guha, the Dalai Lama and former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Of these, I have only attended Dr. Kalam's lecture and now Mr. Bachchan's. And if I compare this talk with last year's lecture by Dr Kalam, last year's talk was very focused, energetic, and heartfelt, whereas Mr. Bachchan, I feel, in trying to touch too many topics ended up delivering a speech that was all over the place.

Mr Amitabh Bachhan ended his lecture by reciting lines of his father's poem 'Khoon ki chhaap' (Imprints of blood). An applause followed this powerful recitation. After the lecture, Mr. Rajdeep Sardesai joined Mr Bachchan at the stage. It took the whole show in completely different direction and the event completely changed into another bollywood or publicity show. And something which I don't even want to mention on this blog. On top of that, bollywood-type questions are asked by audience except only afew which were around the topics Mr Bachhan chose for the annual lecture. If I recall my memories from Dr Kalam's talk, it was seriously a very sensible dialogue between audience and the chief guest. And most of the thoughts were tightly connected, which made the whole dialogue meaningful. Click Here, if you want to know more about the last year's Annual Lecture.
Big B also sat down with TV host Rajdeep Sardesai and spoke about a range of things. Mr Bachhan also patiently answered some questions from the audience, for whom the icing on the cake was his recital of his father's most widely known work 'Madhushala'. Some of the Bachhan fans forgot that it was Penguin Annual Lecture and what all makes sense & what not.
With all due respect to Mr. Bachchan, I felt sad about my decision to come for the evening and take out 5 hours of my schedule. I hope that Penguin can manage something more substantial in their next year's annual lecture. We have high hopes from Penguin.
