Wayanad region in Kerala has lot to offer and 10 days trip is not enough to explore this part of the country. After beautiful walk around Banasura Sagar dam, we headed towards Pookode lake. Pookode Lake is located 15 kilometers away from Kalpetta. This Photo Journey shares some of the moments spent around Pookode lake in Waynad district.
It's again a well regulated tourist spot, which has a dedicated entry and a counter for buying tockets & security check. I think entry ticket to Pookode lake was 40 rs per person. The lake is under the South Wayanad forest division and run by District Tourism promotion council. Boating facilities, children's park, handicrafts and spices emporium and fresh water aquarium are among the tourist attractions here.
There is a huge space dedicated as kids area. It seems that lot of local folks come to Pookode lake for picnics. Nicely maintained and clean spaces. This kids' zone is facing Pookode lake. On the left hand side, there are few shops selling different types of snacks.
We chose a place to sit and have snacks, from where who lake was visible. Above photograph is clicked from same place. It was good to see most of the folks using dustbins for throwing the remains. And authorities had put appropriate number of dustbins around Pookode lake.
Pookode lake has lot of lotuses and the lake looks beautiful from the other side. Pookode Lake is a scenic freshwater lake in the Wayanad district in Kerala, South India. Pookode lake is a natural fresh water lake is surrounded by green forest from on all sides. This forest is spread over high mountains around the lake. All this setting makes it a beautiful place to spend some quality time in peace. Are you wondering about peace at touristic place? :)
Pookode lake is spread across an area of approximately 8 hectares and with a maximum depth of 6.5 metres. Lake is 3 km from Vythiri town and is one of the most popular tourist spots in Wayanad.
There is a path built around the lake and people prefer to walk around this beautiful terrain surrounded by huge trees of the forest. As you walk around the lake, lot of birds welcome you with beautiful sounds. We across a region with lot of colorful flowers and hundreds of butterflies surrounding these flowers. We stopped there for 10 minutes and then moved ahead.
It was extremely difficult to capture these butterflies when they were flying, so here is one of the clear shots of butterflies I could get :). We were extremely happy about our decision to take a relaxed walk around the lake and skip boating.
It seems that Pookode lake has the shape of India's map. The green cover around the lake makes Pookode a special and unique lake in Kerala. Pethia pookodensis, is a species of cyprinid fish known to occur only in Pookode Lake.
The lake has abundance of blue lotus and fresh water fishes. The forests surrounding the lake hold many wild animals, birds and flies.
After good time at Pookode lake, we headed towards Suchipara Waterfalls in our Auto. Keep watching this space for our next post on Suchipara and some of the unexpected experiences we had.
