I am not sure how many of you remember about the debate about clicking photographs in squares. First version of Instagram supported sharing square photographs only. Which means, if you are clicking photographs in Landscapes or portraits, you had to crop it in square or click directly through Instagram in square form. It was uncomfortable for many but then folks adopted this and also started realising lot of benefits of square photographs.
Gradually world started realising benefits of square shaped photographs, especially about retrofitting square compositions. As people started using square frames, we realised and started appreciating different other benefits of this new composition in our lives.
It's not that square frames were not shot/processed before but Instagram forcefully made it third main frame type.
When Instagram introduced stories, there was a subtle enforcement in that as well. You could only shoot and share the story in portrait dimension. Before Insta stories, I had hardly shot videos in portrait mode and gradually I realised that I started thinking about shooting things specifically for stories and then I started appreciating this dimension for videos especially.

1. Rule of Thirds in Square composition ?
What do you think about it. Does this rule still apply to Square photographs? May be or may be not. But look back at all photographs you clicked in Square and see the ratio where you applied rule of thirds and where you didn't apply this rule but could have been applied.
In the post, you may see examples of square images with rule of thirds but that's certainly not the complete set. So want to keep it open for you to figure this for yourself.
2. Square Photographs in Black and White ?
Shooting Black & White is one of those loves, which are situational and they fit well with square compositions. Over the years, I observed that I have been exploiting this combination quite a lot.
3. Patterns & Shapes in Square composition Photographs?
Just notice above photograph which has circular logo on the wall. Can this be more beautiful in other aspect ratios? And for that matter, think of other geometrical shapes which can't fit well in Square. E.g. - Square photograph can hold a triangular shapes pretty well and for that matter rectangles as well.
I click lot of photographs which are only shapes and textures. Over the time I started loving square composition for those frames.
4. It's easy to get rid of not so important space in your simplistic photographs.
5. Fitment of Square Photographs on your Website or Blog?
When it comes to fitting photographs in a defined template, there are challenges to place photographs in a way that they fit well and look good. With Square, there are very few challenges because both the dimensions are same so it makes lay-outing pretty easy.
