While we were on day tour from San Jose City of Costa Rica, our guide Manuel told us about another city called Cartago which used to capital city of Costa Rica. When I read more I got to know that Cartago is the capital of Cartago province and was the capital of Costa Rica from 1574 to 1824. This blog-post shares our experiences of Cartago town and some of the surprises it offered to us.
Cartago is the third largest city in Costa Rica which is located at 30 minutes drive from San Jose (depends upon traffic situation), as distance wise it's just 25 kilometres.
The Cartago city is at the base of Irazú Volcano National Park.
It includes the districts of city downtown: Oriental, Occidental (known as the typical downtown area), San Nicolás (the main entrance to the city, at west), El Carmen (north), Dulce Nombre, San Francisco (at south, San Francisco is known commonly as Aguacaliente), and Guadalupe (Arenilla).

Cartago City is surrounded by some beautiful hilly terrains as well as lush green valleys full of diverse vegetation. The very first photograph of the post is not clicked inside the city but around Orosi valley which is very close to the city. Even the whole terrain from Cartago city to Irazu Volcano is very beautiful & full of agricultural landscapes all around.
When we talk about main places to visit & explore in Cartago city and around - Basilica of Los Angeles, the "Ruins of Santiago Apostle Church", The City Museum, Maria Auxiliadora church, the Technological Institute of Costa Rica, The Central Market (especially on Thursdays and Saturdays) and the main building of San Luis Gonzaga High School, site of the first Central American Supreme Court are the key places.
Cultural activities take place at the "Casa de la Ciudad" and the "Casa de la Cultura", as well as in the campus of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica.
The province is known for its rich ecological diversity and dense tropical rainforests along the mountain ranges near the Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes.
Let's also talk about places to eat in Cartago city. We will not go to the popular places to eat fancy food but travel friendly and time convenient, yet hygienic food.
There are dozens of restaurants around Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels and we chose one of those. There is good variety in terms of kind of restaurants, food and prices. We chose a moderate one which was serving full meal with drink at a nominal price. The one we chose was more popular amongst locals visiting Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels and we preferred that over some of the fancier options mainly catering to tourists.
