Rum Tasting at Four Seasons Payagayo Peninsula, Costa Rica

Rum from Costa Rica and from surrounding regions is quite popular. There are so many popular Rum brands from Costa Rica and neighbouring countries. It was not known to me before I visited Costa Rica and special Four Seasons at Papagayo Peninsula. This post shares more about our Rum Tasting experience and a lot more about Rum from Costa Rica, along with some recommendations for Rum lovers or folks who love to do experiments in their bars.

It was not known to me before I visited Costa Rica and special Four Seasons at Papagayo Peninsula. This post shares more about our Rum Tasting experience and a lot more about Rum from Costa Rica, along with some recommendations for Rum lovers or folks who love to do experiments in their bars. 


On our second day in Costa Rica, when we took our first tour around San Jose our guide introduced us to Cacique. Cacique is a Venezuelan brand of rum & best-selling rum in Venezuela and a leading exporter to other South American countries and Spain.     The Cacique product lines are owned by Diageo, the largest multinational beer, wine and spirits company in the world. The word "cacique" means "chief of the tribe" in Spanish and it comes at different price-points. It comes in several varieties, starting with the simplest Cacique Origen and then moving up to the Cacique 500. The most expensive is the Cacique Antiguo. It seems the cheapest version of Cacique rum is quite popular in Costa Rica and consumed with a mixer of spicy guava juice.

Centenario Rum, which is also known as Ron Centenario is based in Costa Rica, where the company produces a massive number of varieties, all made from local sugarcane and aged in oak. We tried 3 versions of Centenario - 12 years, 15 years and with 18 years aging.     More about Centenario here.     The other Rum bottle you see in above photograph is Zacapa. Zacapa is a premium rum produced in Guatemala by Rum Creation and Products, a subsidiary of Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, and distributed and marketed by Diageo. Ron Zacapa is distinctive in that it is aged in a facility at an altitude with natural coolness which avoids evaporation resulting in an usually smooth product. Centenario Rum, which is also known as Ron Centenario is based in Costa Rica, where the company produces a massive number of varieties, all made from local sugarcane and aged in oak. We tried 3 versions of Centenario - 12 years, 15 years and with 18 years aging.

The Santa Teresa 1796 Rum is made from the finest sugar cane which grows in the Aragua Valley in Venezuela and is subjected to repeatedly strict quality control.     After fermentation two different systems are used and each produce unique distillates for the distillation process. Then not just young and old distillates are blended with each other because the focus of Santa Teresa was always to find the perfect balance. Flor de Cana 12 is a very special golden rum from one of Central America's most celebrated producers, Flor de Cana from Nicaragua. These rums keep getting better and better. Botran 18 was one of the best rums I remember from this evening. I loved this one, although I am not an expert to describe why :). Certainly this rum had a very special punch and smoothness. Solera 1893 is Botran's rum aged for up to 18 years. This has sweet notes of vanilla and butterscotch, backed up by spice.

During this rum tasting session, we were told about certain properties of different Rums and what kind of spices/ingredients go well with what kind of rum. For me it was more of experiment for me and at the end I had zero learning about mixing, but can say that thoroughly enjoyed these different rums from South and Central America.

The rum master at Four Seasons guides guests through the infusion process, explaining how each ingredient will affect the rum’s flavour profile, which is certainly very hard thing to understand.

At the end of the session, all guests are also offered Spiced rum in branded bottle under the title of Four Seasons, with special price tag which was not very encouraging so we left that offer and planned to pick a bottle from Airport.

It was a nice session and free way to get alcohol for an hour :). Let me make it explicit that Rum Tasting is a complimentary event at Four Season Papagayo Peninsula of Costa Rica. You only need to book it in advance and there are many such activities to enrol for.
