Umiam lake was built by the Assam State Electricity Board in the early 1960s and it was created because of the dam created on Umiam river. The dam's original purpose was to store water for hydroelectric power generation unit.
The Umiam lake serves as a major tourist attraction for the state of Meghalaya. It is also a popular destination for water sport and adventure facilities. Tourists visit this spot for kayaking, water cycling, scooting and boating.

While you are driving on the road from Guwahati to Shillong, the lake comes on your right and visible for quite a long stretch. There are even places where vehicles stop for tea/maggie breaks from where Umiam lake can be seen. Umiam lake is in outskirts of Shillong and can be visited as a part of Shillong sight seeing or while travelling to or from Guwahati. Boating is available at Umiam Lake. Two types of boats take either 5 or 10 people. One has to wait till gathering of required number of people to buy boating tickets. The place is maintained very cleanly.
