Music is the food for my soul every since I was a child. I do not have any talent to create music, but I do have immense capacity to enjoy it. Listening to old melodies by Rafi, Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, and the English music of the 80s and the 90s still gives me enough peace and happiness to tide over any unhappiness or loneliness. And there are songs for every mood. Philosophical songs, love songs, songs of reflection, songs of solitude, nostalgia...songs that can express every emotion you need to.
Once I had a super-specific requirement and my heart was searching for a song to wish a loved one happiness that transcends one lifetime, and believe it or not I found it. And today, I start this post with that very song. Listen to the this song if you need some healing, or if you are searching for a way to wish happiness of someone who is no longer with you. It liberates you and makes you feel lighter.
Continuing in the same vein, there is another amazing song that I find very fulfilling. This one is bidding good-bye. There is no angst here, just some very beautiful wishes for the other one.
The song is beautifully composed - lyrics, music, cinematography, everything. One cannot expect any less from RK Studios. They have indeed brought to us some of the most beautiful compositions in Bollywood. The song is "Jaanewale o Jaanewale" from the movie Henna. It starts with a beautiful couplet:
"सदा न बुलबुल नगमें गाये
सदा न फसले बहारा
सदा न हुस्न जवानी रहते
सदा न सोहबतें यारा"
If one isn't blessed with a way with words, songs provide an outlet. And it is our good fortune that humankind is blessed w
ith so many talented human beings. They give words to our feelings, they conjure tunes that touch our hearts.
A song that I find really beautiful, and this is a newer one. Music is new-age, words abstract and yet relatable. One of the most beautiful part of the song is this, in female voice:
साँसें खो गई है किसकी आहों में,
मैं खो गई हूँ जाने किसकी बाहों में,
मंजिलों से राहें ढूँढती चली,
खो गई है मंजिल कहीं राहों में..
The song is "Kahin to hogi woh..." from the cute movie Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. In the ethereal voice of Rashid Ali, music composed by A.R Rehman, here's the beautiful song to give words to your longings:
The next song is another beautiful number that I heard for the first time when I was in school. The song is about purity of love, innocence, and nostalgia. It is also about how we build up a place in our minds over time. For example, the place known as Yoksom in Sikkim. In my mind, now, it is no less than paradise.
This song "La Isla Bonita", sung by Madonna, is a beautiful number built on the backbone of Brazilian Samba music. Beautiful lyrics and Madonna's voice make this an unforgettable song, one that you can listen to at any point in the day or in all kinds of moods.
Hope you have enjoyed this musical journey. I will be back with more such songs soon.
