Walking around the Streets of Heritage City Udaipur in Rajasthan to see some stunning architecture, colourful graffitis, Old Havelis & lot of surprises along the way
When I came back from Udaipur, I missed one thing big time and that was walking the streets of Udaipur. We walked a little but that exposed me to treasure which seemed to be endless and I wish I had spent more time on the streets of Udaipur town of Rajasthan. But that's the motivation to plan another visit when the city is transformed into a true heritage city with only electric karts running in old part of the city and much better infrastructure. This blogpost shared about Udaipur streets and what all they offer for different people in terms of architecture, food, heritage, art, colours, silver jewellery, handicraft stuff and lot more. It depends what you want to do, but all these places can offer you real feel of Udaipur Town.
We were staying around Lake Pichola and during one of the days, we walked around all the ghats of Lake Pichola and I must say that it was one of the most beautiful walks we had in terms of diverse experiences it offers. Some construction work was going on, which was little disruptive. The good news is that, this work will make these walks even better. If you look at above photograph, you see one of the old havelis around lake Pichola. There are so many havelis around Lake Pichola and they expose you to different styles, architecture, colours, state and lot more which is hard to explain in words.
Above photograph shows one of the gates opening in front of bridge which connects both parts of the Lake Pichola. Ghats are on both sides of the lake. There are 3 bridges like above which connect one side of the Lake Pichola with other.
Above photograph is clicked from Ambrai Ghat which is quite popular for sunset views around Lake Pichola. Above photograph shows the famous City Palace on other side and the palace looks even more beautiful in evening light.
Above photograph shows entry of a house in one of the streets around Jagdish temple. While you roam around the streets of Udaipur, you will find beautiful decorations on outer walls of the houses and especially around doors. Some of the doors have very vibrant colours which you will see in Udaipur only.
While walking around these narrow streets of Udaipur, take few minutes to look up and you will have some of the most beautiful havelis standing high in Udaipur streets. Beware that many of them continuously need maintenance so be aware that construction work may be going on, so watch your steps by keeping your aware of your surroundings when in streets of Udaipur. Above photograph shows havelis around Lake Pichola. Many of these havelis of Udaipur are now converted into hotels.
Udaipur streets will also offer you some unusual things and more streets you go into, different vibes you will get. Above photograph shows a street which had store of kitchen utensils. And above photograph shows that they not only sell home use stuff but also into commercial or large scales community kitchens or restaurants/dhabas.
While walking from Fateh Sagar Lake to our hotel around Lal Ghat of Lake Pichola, I noticed this building which has details on the top mentioning about Rajasthan Gun Corporation Co. This is first time I saw something related to guns in the middle of a busy street. I was curious about figuring out more but we were in a rush for some reason.
Above photograph shows a haveli which has maintained old doors of these windows on first floor. If you look closely you will realise that probably it's only wall now and interiors have changed or the haveli itself is abandoned. There is a family living inside this haveli and there is also a small temple on ground floor.
How many times you see bright red doors? you see them in Udaipur and that too with beautiful art on it's side. Look at those iron rings which are not used on modern doors now.
Noticed quite a few temples in Udaipur streets. Like the one you see in above photograph was a small temple in the middle of houses all around. At few yards, you see lot of jewellery shops of Udaipur. For me the most interesting part was these art figures on all outer walls of the temple and I can also see similar art-work inside the temple.
Udaipur is also a great place for shopping handicraft for your home or gifting. Many of the markets around Lake Pichola and City Palace has colourful souvenirs apart from decorative stuff.
Above photograph shows one of the fixed price shop in front of Jagdish temple of Udaipur. When you go out for shopping in places like Udaipur, spend some time sensing the price range for stuff you want to buy. If you are confident about negotiations, then you can buy from any shop but if you are not then chose a fixed price shop where prices are matching your budget.
Udaipur city is full of these jharokhas all across and some of them offer great views. Above photograph is clicked around Fateh Sagar lake, when we were walking back to our hotel around Lake Pichola.
There are some huge graffitis around Ambrai ghat on Lake Pichola in Udaipur. I should have clicked this photograph better to show the scale of the graffiti.
Udaipur is full of frescos all around the city. Most of the public walls have graffitis on them. Above photograph looked like a female traffic controller is asking the modern car to stop and help horse & 2 men pass. Do you see that or I am unnecessarily forcing that on my viewers.
Udaipur streets are full of life and photographers can be happiest people in this city. Every corner, wall, gate, park, lake etc has a lot of offer to every visitor of Udaipur city & artists/photographers.
So apart from exploring some of the main tourist places of Udaipur, do take out time to walk a lot around these streets and you will experience real Rajasthan. And if you have done it, please do share your viewpoint in comments section.
If you liked this post and found it helpful, I would request you to follow these things when traveling -
1. Manage your waste well and don’t litter Use dustbins.
2. Tell us if you went to a place and found it hard to locate a dustbin.
3. Avoid bottle waters in hills. Usually you get clean water in hills and water bottles create lot of mess in our ecosystem.
4. Say big no to plastic and avoid those unhealthy snacks packed in plastic bags. Rather buy fruits.
5. Don't play loud blaring music in forests of jungle camps. You are a guest in that ecosystem and disturbing the locals (humans and animals) is not polite.
