One can start the exploration either from Texas University of Texas Capital. If you start from University, next you see is Texas Capital and then come to more active part of the downtown with interesting restaurants, showrooms and pubs. There are some beautiful churches in different streets of the Austin Downtown. And as move ahead, you can go to South Congress Avenue by crossing Congress Bridge or walk along the Lady Bird Lake.
Downtown is where the city's high-rise buildings are located, as well as being the center of government and business for the region. Downtown Austin is currently experiencing a building boom, with many condos and high rise towers being built. Above photograph gives a view of highrise buildings from Congress Bridge. The other side of this bridge is the famous South Congress Avenue.
Austin hosts many important events of the world throughout the year and when I was there, SXSW was going on. South by Southwest, abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By, is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organised jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. When I was there, everyone there were artists with bands of SXSW and some street shows happening. There were long queues outside event venues.
In last few years, Austin is becoming an lucrative option for IT companies to open their offices and in downtown you will see buildings with logos of software companies like 'Google'.
Austin Downtown is well connected through buses from various parts of the city, so reaching downtown should be pretty easy if you haven't rented a car. Downtown also has a train station, so if you are close to any of the stations, that can be another option to reach Downtown.

The Second Street District is an entertainment and shopping district in Downtown Austin, just north of Lady Bird Lake. Sixth Street is a historic street and entertainment district in Downtown Austin. The area around nearby 4th Street and 6th Street has been a major entertainment district since the 1970s. Many bars, clubs, music venues, and shopping destinations are located on E. 6th Street between Congress Avenue and Interstate 35 and many offer live music at one time or another during the week. Traffic is generally blocked on E. The area of Sixth Street west of Lavaca is known as the West 6th Street District. Recently, there has been a growing movement to develop this area as an entertainment district of its own, geared toward the live music crowd.
If you have very limited time in Austin, you can also opt for bus tour which takes you through main streets and main places of Austin. There is usually a guide, who keeps telling you about the place you are passing by. Bus stops at main places so that you can click some photographs. There are double decker buses for better view from the top.
Above photograph shows press event happening for one of the art shows during SXSW.
During sunset, watching thousands of Bats in the sky around Congress bridge is one of the key activities people wait for. One can sit around the bridge and enjoy these sights. You can also take a cruise which goes under the Congress bridge and helps you see these bats moving around. I didn't take the cruise so can't comments if that offers better viewing option, but I enjoyed watching these bats from Congress Bridge.
Above photograph shows the famous Paramount Theatre of Austin, which is on main street of the downtown from where you can see Texas Capitol on one side and Congress Bridge on other side. The Paramount Theater is an Austin cultural icon. Built and completed in 1915, it was originally made for vaudeville. Over the years, as movies became the leading form of entertainment, the theater was remodelled with upholstered chairs and a state-of-the-art sound system. The theater would nearly close in the 1960s as people made the move from theaters to television. However, the building would be restored before closing, leading the Paramount Theater to avoid demolition. Today, the theater continues to operate, viewing popular movies. In March, some special movies are screened at Paramount for SXSW.
To save time, one can use these electric bikes who charge per minute and one needs to stand on them to roam around. Lot of people use them in Austin and you end up saving good amount of time. You can use it from one point to another, finish your ride. and then pick new one for another ride. I didn't try so can't comments how much it costs and if cost is better if used for longer time or not.
Austin Downtown is a great place to feel the vibe of Austin city of Texas.
