Magnificent Cenotaphs at the Bada Bagh, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan || Exorbitant Ticket Prices can be a deterrent to anyone visiting the place
Bada Bagh is another place in Jaisalmer, apart from Vyas Chhatri, where you can find beautiful cenotaphs. These Chhatris were built to commemorate the various kings who have ruled Jaisalmer over the centuries. The number of Chhatris here are much larger than the Vyas chhatris though and the size and beauty of the chhatris vary based on the position of person for whom it was constructed.
While the Internet shows that the ticket charges are Rs 100 for one person and Rs. 100 for camera, we were asked to pay Rs. 250 per person when we reached there in our car. We had seen one car before us turn back instead of going into the complex and we understood why that had happened. Rs. 500 for two people sounded very unreasonable. So we too parked our car outside and clicked the Chhatris from a distance.
Bada Bagh is located at about 6km north of Jaisalmer and is located close to a wind farm so there are plenty of opportunities for scenic shots there. As far as the history of the place goes, it started with the cenotaph of Maharawal Jait Singh II, built by his son Lunkaran in the early 16th century. After this several cenotaphs were added, the most recent one being for Maharawal Jawahir Sigh, which dates 20th century, but lies unfinished.
The cenotaphs, as expected, have been carved out of sandstone. When you visit the place you will see the cenotaphs in several different sizes depending upon the position - the ruling kings, their queens, their princes, and other royal family members. Each cenotaph has a marble slab with inscriptions about the deceased royal.
