Do you know about the 'Danish' Fort in India which is located at a beautiful location round the coast of Bay of Bengal?
One of the most exciting places we visited during our road-trip from Noida to Rameshwaram is Danish Fort in Tharangambadi and there are multiple reasons for that. This blogpost will share more about the Danish fort, the amazing places to explore around it, along with specially curated list of tips by Travellingcamera.
Tharangambadi, also known as Tranquebar (the name which is more familiar to folks who studied history in India), is a small town located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. The town is home to one of the most historically significant sites in the region, the Danish Fort. Before this visit, I had never heard about any 'Danish' fort in India.
Built in the early 18th century by Danish traders, the Danish fort served as a key trading post for the Danish East India Company. The fort is an impressive structure, made of brick and stone, with a moat that surrounds it. The fort has a rich history, and it's easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of trading activity that once took place within its walls.
Inside the fort, you'll find a museum that showcases the history of the Danish settlement in India, including artifacts from the early days of the trading post. The exhibits are well-curated and provide a fascinating glimpse into the past.
The fort also offers a beautiful view of the sea and surrounding area as you can see in abve photograph. The fort is a great place to relax, take in the views, and learn about the history of the town. It's almost on the beach and hence it's a very special spot for any fort. You may seen beachside forts in Goa as well but vibe of this place is very different and most interesting part is that in 2-3 mins you can reach the beach.
One of the best things about the fort is that it is located in the heart of Tharangambadi, which is a charming town with a unique blend of Danish and Indian culture. The town is home to several other historical sites and monuments, including the Zion Church, which was built by the Danish in 1701, and the New Jerusalem Church, which was built in 1856. Above photograph shows the street you drive through to reach the Danish Fort on other side. This street has lot of historical structures and churches.
Zion Church in Tharangambadi (near Danish Fort) :
The Zion Church is one of the oldest surviving Danish churches in India, which was built in 1701 by the Danish East India Company. The Zion church is a beautiful example of colonial architecture, with a white-washed exterior and a distinctive bell tower. The church has been very well preserved over the centuries. The interiors of the Zion church are simple yet elegant, with wooden pews and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Visitors can also see the beautiful frescoes on the walls and the ceiling of the church. The frescoes depict scenes from the Bible, including the Last Supper and the Crucifixion.
The Zion church is also an active place of worship for the local community. Visitors can attend a service and experience the unique blend of Danish and Indian culture that is evident in the town. A visit to the Zion Church in Tharangambadi is a must for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts and those who are interested in the unique blend of cultures. The church is a great way to learn about the past and see a beautiful example of colonial architecture.
If you're a history buff or simply looking for a unique and off-the-beaten-path travel destination, a visit to the Danish Fort in Tharangambadi is a must. This historical site is a great way to learn about the past, while also enjoying the present-day charm of this small coastal town. Specially the museum inside the fort.
