Diljit Dosanjh, the Punjabi sensation known for his versatile talents in music, acting, and now vlogging, has recently turned his lens toward the breathtaking Spiti Valley. Through his engaging vlogs, he has captured Spiti’s raw beauty and unique culture, igniting curiosity among his fans. This has led to an interesting question: Could his vlogs do for Spiti what the film 3-Idiots did for Leh?

The "3 Idiots" Effect on Leh

In 2009, 3 Idiots introduced the world to the stunning Pangong Lake in Ladakh. The film’s closing scenes, shot against the backdrop of Pangong’s surreal blue waters, led to a tourism boom. Leh, once a destination for seasoned travelers, became a household name. Pangong Lake saw a surge in visitors, resulting in an entire tourism ecosystem built around its cinematic fame.

After wonderful journey from Shimla to Kaza through Jeori, Nako, Gue, Tabo & lot of other villages in Kinnaur & Spiti valley it was time to explore other places around Kaza and gradually head back. When you go from Shimla to Kaza, there are 2 ways to return back - one is to take the same route through some detours which I am going to explain in my future posts and other is to move ahead towards Manali & then head back to Delhi or wherever you want to go. In second option you don’t need to hit Shimla and folks who plan it well do the same way. We were traveling in a Santro car and road ahead was not very favorable. Also we had some time constraints, so didn’t want to risk things. In today’s post I will be sharing about our explorations around Kaza, which includes visit to Kye Monastery, drive till jibber village which is supposedly world’s 3rd highest village, Langza, Koumik & then Dhankar along with some interesting experiences on the way to Dhankhar from Koumik.

The Spotlight on Spiti

Diljit’s vlogs about Spiti offer a similar potential for a tourism wave. With his natural charm and massive global fan base, his content showcases Spiti’s untouched beauty—from its majestic monasteries like Key Gompa to the mesmerizing villages of Tabo and Kaza. Unlike Ladakh, which has seen significant commercialization, Spiti remains relatively untouched, making it an explorer's dream.

As we reached Langza village and near the Statue, we thought of spending some time around these hills which were further surrounded by snow covered mountains all around. I loved these houses and if you notice there is a layer of grass on the roof and that's mainly for maintaining temperature inside the house, especially in winters.

Why Spiti Might Be the Next Big Thing

This is how Gue Monastery looks from a distance when you are driving towards it. This mummy is places in a room near this Monastery. Gue village comes on the way, so if you are planning to visit the place just take a pause in village to check if the room is open. If not, you need to take someone with you so that room can be opened to see this mummy. Related Post - Morning walk around Nako Lake and the village in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh

Breathtaking Landscapes:

Like Leh, Spiti offers jaw-dropping visuals, from barren mountain ranges to crystal-clear rivers. Diljit’s cinematic captures could attract a new audience who may not have been aware of Spiti’s allure.

While you are traveling in Spiti don't expect fancy food expect few places in Kaza town which is sort of commercial headquarter of Lahaul and Spiti district. Related Post - Basmati Dhaba at Badhal, on the way to Spiti Valley & Kinnaur from Shimla

Adventure Appeal:

Spiti is ideal for trekking, biking, and off-roading. It offers a thrilling adventure, much like what Leh was known for a decade ago.

Now that we are sharing about different Monasteries of Spiti Valley, one of the beautifully located Monastery is the one in Kaumik which is at quite a high altitude and surrounded by dry, high and snow covered mountains. Reaching this place it little tricky as road is not very good and if weather is not good, it gets little more difficult. Especially when snow is around the road and it creates slush all around. This blogpost shares more about the monastery, some tips around exploring areas around it.

Authentic Cultural Experience:

The Buddhist monasteries, traditional villages, and local festivals in Spiti provide a spiritual and cultural experience that is deeply enriching.

If you are visiting North India and wish to explore some of the main hill stations in North India, we have tried to make an attempt to share list of top 10 Hill Stations you should consider. Below are the names of these hill stations, along with reasons about why we picked them for you. It was certainly very hard to chose between plenty of options. Name of every place below is a link and would share lot more details in terms of what all to expect in these hill stations, how to reach these hill stations from Delhi or nearby cities, along with safety & pocket friendly tips. Let's get started and explore some of these options.

Social Media's Role:

Diljit’s vlogs don’t just highlight the scenery but also the personal moments and human connections, making Spiti feel relatable and inviting.

The Challenges of Increased Tourism

While increased visibility for Spiti could benefit the local economy, it also raises concerns about preserving the fragile ecosystem and maintaining the valley's tranquility. Leh's tourism surge brought both benefits and challenges—ranging from improved infrastructure to environmental strain. A similar trend in Spiti calls for sustainable tourism practices to ensure that its pristine beauty isn’t compromised.

Diljit Dosanjh’s influence is undeniable, and his vlogs could potentially put Spiti on the global tourism map in the same way 3 Idiots did for Leh. Whether this will result in a long-term shift in Spiti's popularity remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his vlogs are inspiring countless people to dream of exploring the hidden gem that is Spiti.

For those yet to visit, there may be no better time to experience Spiti’s serene charm—before it becomes the next Pangong Lake.
